About the event: Bob Resnick will be personally screening these films demonstrating at least one approach to contemporary Gestalt Therapy.
The films are real therapy sessions, in real time with Bob as therapist from the GATLA’s summer European training workshops. There are no actors, no scripts and nothing has been added or cut. They are professionally recorded and subtitled in English which makes them easier to understand. The screening includes a 28 minute introduction to Gestalt Therapy making it appropriate for both Gestalt Therapists and therapists from any other orientation. This format is particularly attractive to interested non-Gestalt therapists who want a “safe” way of experiencing Gestalt and to Gestalt Therapists perhaps interested in seeing another branch of the Gestalt tree than their own. The films focus on field theory, phenomenology and are deeply dialogic. The emphasis is on process, awareness and the dialogic relationship as being the best living crucible to access characterological ways people interrupt healthy self regulation of their contact and withdrawal rhythms. The relevant past has a life in the present and is accessible in the present. Bring your biases, your ability to perceptually reorganize and most importantly, your sense of humor.
Bob, who will be present to introduce each film, appreciates and encourages questions, comments and comparisons at the end of the screening. Robert W. Resnick, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist, has been a Gestalt and Couples Therapist for over 45 years and an international trainer for over 40 years. Trained (1965-1970) and personally certified (1969) by Drs. Fritz Perls and James Simkin, he is probably the youngest of the “old timers”. Proudly, Dr. Resnick was chosen by Fritz Perls (and invited by Nels In de Vid from Holland) to be the first Gestalt Therapist to introduce Gestalt Therapy to Europe in the summer of 1969 where he presented both a lecture and a training workshop. He has been presenting Gestalt and Couples training workshops in Europe continually since that time. His interview “Gestalt Therapy: Principles Prisms and Perspectives” defining his views of Gestalt Therapy at that time, appears in the summer 1995 issue of the British Gestalt Journal. “The Recursive Loop of Shame” appears in the Gestalt Review 1997. “Chicken Soup Is Poison” (Perls Festschrift) circa 1967. He is currently developing a series of contemporary Couples Therapy and Gestalt Therapy video demonstration and training tapes. His first clinical practicum (while moonlighting as a Columbia University graduate student) was driving a New York taxicab. Bob’s style is warm and engaging and he speaks with clarity and humor.
